What Size Painting Goes Above a Sofa? A cm Guide for Dubai Living Rooms

If you have searched for what size painting above sofa and found only inch-based advice for American houses, this guide is for you. Everything below is in centimetres and worked out for the rooms I walk into in Dubai: apartments with one long wall facing a glass façade, and villas with ceilings past three metres.
I am a painter, not an interior designer, but I have hung a lot of my own work above other people’s sofas, and this is the maths I use before recommending a size, whether a client is choosing from my abstract gallery or asking me to paint to measure. Measure the sofa first: its width, and the height of its back from the floor.
The two-thirds rule, in centimetres
The old rule says art above a sofa should be about two-thirds the width of the sofa; in practice anything between 60% and 75% looks right. Below 50% the painting floats and reads as an afterthought; above 90% it competes with the furniture and looks like a headboard.
The rule is about width, not area; height is set separately by the sofa back and the ceiling. A 220 cm sofa wants 132–165 cm of art, as one canvas or several combined, gaps included. If a painting is framed, measure the frame. For canvases 60 cm wide and up I set the gap in a pair at 8–10 cm.
Sofa width to painting width
These are the sofa widths I meet most often in Dubai homes, with the painting width the 60–75% range gives you.
- Loveseat or compact 2-seater, about 140–150 cm: art 85–110 cm wide. A single 90 × 60 cm landscape canvas sits comfortably here.
- Standard 2-seater, about 160–180 cm: art 95–135 cm wide. One canvas at 100–120 cm, or on the wider sofas a pair of 60 cm wide canvases, about 130 cm in total.
- 3-seater, about 210–230 cm: art 125–170 cm wide. One canvas at 140–160 cm, a pair of 80 × 80 cm squares (about 170 cm with the gap), or a pair of 60 × 90 cm canvases at the lower end.
- L-shaped sectional: measure only the straight run against the wall you are hanging on and ignore the chaise. That run is often 250–300 cm, which asks for 150–220 cm of art and usually means a commission or several panels.
- Majlis seating: a run of low seating along one wall can be 3–5 m. Treat it as a sequence rather than one painting: a long horizontal at 200–300 cm, or three to five equal panels spaced evenly along the run.
How high to hang art above a sofa
The bottom edge of the canvas sits 15–25 cm above the sofa back; closer and heads rub against it, higher and the painting stops belonging to the sofa. The centre sits at about 145–150 cm from the floor, standing eye level. A sofa back at 85–90 cm plus a 20 cm gap puts the bottom edge at 105–110 cm, so a 60 cm tall canvas centres at 135–140 cm and a 90 cm tall one at 150–155 cm.
With villa ceilings of 3 m and more, keep the same 15–25 cm gap and do not hang higher. Go taller instead, 90 × 120 cm rather than 90 × 60 cm, or stack a pair vertically, so the composition climbs while the bottom edge stays anchored to the sofa. Majlis seating is the exception: with back cushions at 60–70 cm and everyone seated, drop the centre to around 125–135 cm.
One canvas, a pair, or a triptych?
One large canvas is the calmest solution when the sofa is the main event on that wall. For a 3-seater it needs to be 130 cm or more, and most of my work at that scale is made to order.
A pair reaches the width from two pieces that already exist. Keep both the same height, align the bottom edges and hang them 8–10 cm apart so they read as one object. Arabian Beauty and Light in the Darkness are both 80 × 80 × 4 cm, unframed with deep painted edges, and together they sit at about 170 cm, right for a 3-seater.
A triptych reads as one long horizontal, so the eye travels along the sofa, which suits long sofas and low ceilings. Check the total width: my From My Heart Tryptich spans 90 × 40 cm across three panels, a console or loveseat size, and The Wave is smaller still at 60 × 30 cm, an entryway size. For a triptych at 3-seater scale I paint to order, with a 5–8 cm gap between panels.
Dubai walls: glass, AC vents, gypsum and the TV
Floor-to-ceiling glass. If the glazing faces the sofa wall, the painting is raked by direct afternoon sun. Side light flatters texture; direct sun heats the canvas and fades pigment. Hang at right angles to the glass where you can, or draw the sheers in the afternoon.
AC vents. Do not hang directly under a supply grille. Cold dry air, plus the condensation that forms on grilles in the humid months, is the worst microclimate in the room. Keep at least 30 cm clear of the vent.
Gypsum partitions. Many internal apartment walls are gypsum board on metal studs; tap it, and hollow means gypsum. A 90 × 60 cm canvas weighs a few kilos and hangs from two hollow-wall anchors, but a 4 cm deep 80 × 80 cm piece with heavy texture should go into the studs or onto toggle bolts.
The TV wall. In most layouts the sofa faces the TV, so the art above the sofa is what you see from the entrance. Do not compete with a 65-inch screen, around 145 cm wide, on its own wall; put the painting above the sofa, where it owns the wall.
Real sizes from my studio, matched to sofa widths
Loveseat or compact 2-seater. Capture the Moment, the painting above, is 90 × 60 cm, framed, $1,200. At 90 cm wide it is 60–64% of a 140–150 cm sofa; on a 160 cm two-seater it drops to 56%, which I would still accept with a side table and lamp widening the visual base.
Standard 2-seater, or the lower end for a 3-seater. Soft Power N1 and its sister Soft Power N2 are both 60 × 90 cm at $520 each; with a 10 cm gap they make a 130 cm composition. Colors of the Wind and Freedom is Gold, both 60 × 90 cm at $1,200, are a bolder pairing, but one is framed and the other is not, so hang them as related pieces rather than a tight diptych.
Over 120 cm. For scale, two sold works: Monochrome Code at 150 × 100 cm ($1,500, sold) was a 3-seater size, and Waves at 300 × 100 cm ($2,000, sold) is majlis-run scale. At that scale it is a commission: from about $600 for a 40 × 50 cm piece (about AED 2,200), with a 50% deposit by Stripe or bank transfer, 2–4 weeks for most pieces and 4–6 weeks over 120 cm or with heavy texture, and a progress photo midway. The painter’s-tape test before you buy
Before committing, tape it out. Mark the rectangle on the wall with low-tack painter’s tape at the exact size, bottom edge 15–25 cm above the sofa back; for a pair or triptych, tape every panel and the gaps. Live with it for two days, in morning light, afternoon glare and evening lamplight, and photograph it from the doorway, because the wide shot tells the truth. If it feels small taped, it will feel small painted. Go up a size.
If a finished work still does not feel right once it is up, you have 30 days from delivery to return it for a refund of the artwork price; you cover the return shipping unless it arrived damaged. Within the UAE, delivery is free over $500 and takes 1–3 business days, and in Dubai I can hand-deliver. Commissions cannot be returned, which is why I insist on the tape test first.
Framed or unframed above a living-room sofa?
Most of my larger canvases are on deep stretcher bars, 2 cm for Capture the Moment and 4 cm for the 80 × 80 cm works, and they hang unframed and ready to hang. Unframed suits loose, textured surfaces: the painting stops at its own edge.
A float frame adds roughly 5–7 cm to width and height, which nudges a pair from 130 cm to around 142 cm. Some pieces come framed already, Capture the Moment and Freedom is Gold among them, and every artwork page says whether the work is framed. In a room with a lot of glass, avoid glazing: acrylic and mixed media do not need glass, and glass doubles the glare.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 60 × 90 cm painting hold a 3-seater sofa?
On its own, no. At 60 cm wide it is under 30% of a 210 cm sofa, and turned landscape it only reaches about 40%. A pair hung 8–10 cm apart gives about 130 cm, which is 60% of a 215 cm sofa and works.
Should art be wider than the sofa?
No. Keep it under about 90% of the sofa width; wider makes the sofa look small and the wall top-heavy. The exception is a long horizontal above majlis seating, which is meant to run along the wall.
What if the wall is much wider than the sofa?
Size the art to the sofa, not the wall, and centre it on the sofa. If the empty wall either side bothers you, add a floor lamp, or use a pair to widen the composition without passing 75%.
How high should I hang a painting above a sofa?
Bottom edge 15–25 cm above the sofa back, with the centre of the painting at about 145–150 cm from the floor. For low majlis seating, bring the centre down to 125–135 cm.
What size art goes above a console in the entryway?
The same 60–75% proportion. A 120 cm console takes 70–90 cm of art: a 90 × 40 cm triptych like From My Heart, or a single 60 × 90 cm portrait canvas, hung 15–20 cm above the console top.
